Lung Cancer

The cancerous growth or cancer arising in the tissue of the lungs is known as lung cancer. It has the highest mortality rate among cancer deaths. People who smoke are at very risk of having lung cancer. there are mainly two types of small cell lung cancer and non-small cell cancer. Symptoms are nonspecific until the advance stage is reached. The common symptoms are wheezing, coughing blood, chest pain, and undefined weightloss.
treatment of lung cancer depends mainly on the stage and location of cancer and the age of the patient. for early diagnosed cases we can do surgical removals like pulmonary lobectomy, wedge resection, and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. In severe cases, pneumonectomy is done that means removal of complete lungs. surgery is followed by targeted drug therapy, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy. Palliative care is important as the patient's breathing has to be supported superficially.
A team of pulmonologists along with cardiothoracic surgeons and medical and radiation oncologists are required for complete diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer.
Imagining tests for initial investigations is x-ray and Ct scan which can reveal abnormal mass and growth in the lungs. for the specification of lung cancer, we need to study the sputum cytology and biopsy. Other tests required are bronchoscopy and FNAC.
the five-year survival rate for lung cancer cases is around 20%. as most of the chronic smoking cases cannot be treated well. Lungs being a spongy organ has more chances of metastasis.
