A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted neuroprosthetic device that helps in sense of hearing to an individual who is deaf or hard-of-hearing. One part of the implant sits behind the ear and the other part is surgically fitted under the skin.
Implantation of cochlear implants is performed under general anesthesia in which the surgeon makes an incision behind the ear to access the cochlea to place the electrodes and places the receiver under the skin behind the ear. The surgeon then sutures the wound.
An ENT surgeon should be consulted for implanting Cochlear Implants.
Cochlear Implants, being successful prostheses, have an exceptionally high success rate with less than 1% rejection.
It takes around four to six weeks to recover following the Cochlear Implant Surgery.
